The Walking Dead

Spooky Georgia: Goosebumps, Vampires and Zombies

What do monsters, vampires and zombies all have in common? They were all filmed in Georgia! "Goosebumps" was filmed primarily in Madison, "The Vampire Diaries" filmed in Covington, and "The Walking Dead" films in Senoia. Spend this Halloween on location at some of Georgia’s most “creepy” filming towns.

Goosebumps in Madison

R.L. Stine recently told NPR that he never intended his books (Scholastic) to be scary. Tell that to his son, who unleashes the monsters from this classic children’s series in the movie under the same name, "Goosebumps." Filming locations included a Decatur cemetery, a Cobb County ice rink, several Inman Park neighborhoods and DeKalb School of the Arts, but the most prominent filming location was in Madison.

Families wanting to visit this city dubbed one of the Most Picturesque Villages in the World by Budget Travel will enjoy a moment inside the movie’s jail — known day-to-day as the Madison Welcome Center. From the welcome center, visitors can amble over to Scoops and try out some of the ice cream flavors most adored by star Jack Black while on set shooting. Fans also can get real goosebumps of their own by taking North Georgia Tours’ Madison Ghost Tour.

Vampires in Covington

Is your teen a fan of "The Vampire Diaries"? Head to Covington for the ultimate adventure for true enthusiasts! Start with a Mystic Falls Tour, directed by a group of beloved Vampire Stalkers. You’ll get up-close and personal with filming locations found in all four seasons of TVD, plus you’ll get the scoop on the upcoming season.

After your tour, head to Mystic Grill for lunch or dinner. The restaurant serves as the façade for “The Mystic Grill” that appears on "The Vampire Diaries." Mom and Dad can try a Bloody Mary or get “steaked” for lunch. Or it could just be a fun photo op for true fans!

Zombies in Senoia

Teens and parents who can’t get enough of "The Walking Dead" (raising my hand here!) will not want to miss a stop in Senoia. You’ll find the town of “Woodbury,” with a great shop on Main Street selling TWD paraphernalia. And, you can take a two-hour walking tour through historic downtown with Georgia Tour Company to visit locations used during production of show, as well as "Fried Green Tomatoes," "Pet Sematary II," "Drop Dead Diva," and more.
